Fashion in The 80’s in Two Words: Excess and Extravagance
The 80s are the decade of extravagant excesses, caused by a greater need of freedom.
This need touched different fields, from fashion to music.
The desire to be noticed outlines a chaotic fashion from garments with a sportier shape are combined; leggings, colored hair bands, leg warmers, to other, blazers, vests, maxi furs.
Looking back to this period, towards the end of the 1970s, what will be called, the Punk current, finally emerges.
The iconic fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, marks a line of Punk in the fashion world, and her concept is well represented with her famous quote “When in doubt, better exaggerate”.
Therefore go big or go home was the main philosophy.
And what was happening in the music and pop music world? Exactly the same.
Madonna, The queen of pop, sets the trend with puffy hair, leather details, bright colors and huge earrings.
She overlines several trends that will influence the fashion world for decades.
If this is what was happening worldwide, let’s focus for a moment on Italy.
This is in fact the period in which Milan becomes the capital of fashion and it is through the Milan Fashion Week that some Italian designers such as, Giorgio Armani and Gianni Versace, become famous all over the world.
Thanks above all to these two geniuses that Italian prêt à porter becomes the signature of luxury, internationally speaking.
However, there are many names of great stylists that will make Italy the first district in the world in terms of style, some names were for example: Moschino, with collections rich in pop details, fun, irreverent or Gianfranco Ferré who was able to make an extremely feminine fashion out of a skilful play of geometries, sleeves and important collars.
Some of the many Italian designers who have made history: Gianni Versace, Valentino Garavani, Giorgio Armani, Elio Fiorucci , Ottavio Missoni, Gianfranco Ferré will forever be recognized.
This name are from that period until now, famous all over the world.
The 80s in Italy, in addition to the great stylists, there was great creativity also in the musical productions of the so-called Italo Disco.
In this context we found great artists who sold, like Den Harrow, 25 million copies of vinyl records and made the world dance.
The trend was for colorful and innovative looks for the music scenes of the time.
For example the great singer Ivana Spagna was flamboyant with colorful outfits and had a great worldwide success with other amazing artist like Raf and Gazebo. These were and still are the great Italians of Italo disco
So what can I say? I miss the 80s and everytime they come back in terms of trends I am so happy!
