Hermès – Autumn/Winter 2017 Women’s Ready-to-Wear Show

WHO is the Hermès woman now? She’s into leather so supple and soft it looks good enough to eat – that’s a given. She likes tonal looks – canary yellow trousers and coat, a sunflower knit and a mustard belt, say, or a caramel coat thrown over matching trousers and a toffee-coloured rollneck. She’s a woman of contrasts: carrying a ladylike top-handled bag but also sporting a pair of lace-up desert boots with an “outward bound” tractor sole. As for her Hermès scarf? She’d rather wear it as a dress, belted decisively with numerous loops of colourful leather cinching her in. Speaking of cinching – there’s a new Collier De Chien belt on the block, and it debuted today on Lara Mullen, in cognac and navy with black blunt studs, adding edge to a classic navy edge-to-edge tailored coat.

All of which means that Hermès woman is getting tough for autumn. Having been cast by Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski as a quiet, discreet, occasionally withdrawn presence that glides in and out of the starriest addresses in pared back buttery leather and swathes of tastefully tonal cashmere, she’s now keen to assert herself a little more. A Seventies shearling-lined jacket in turquoise, teal and khaki? Sign her up. Lapiz blue leather trousers and a printed purple shirt? Yes please. A clashing combo of grassy green, violet, cognac and pale blue? Why not? Sometimes you think you have a brand’s aesthetic pegged. It’s always nice to be surprised.
